The WEP and GPO repeal, stated accurately
The Social Security Fairness Act, signed January 2025, repealed the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset. Both were real, both reduced benefits for some public employees, and both are gone.
For most FRS members, neither one ever applied.
WEP and GPO reduced Social Security for people who earned a pension from work that was not covered by Social Security. FRS-covered employment is Social Security-covered. If your career is FRS, you paid into Social Security the whole time, and the provisions that were repealed were never operating on you.
Where it does matter:
- Service in a Chapter 175/185 municipal police or fire plan. Social Security coverage is required for FRS members but is not automatic for members of those local plans.
- Out-of-state teaching or public service in a state that does not cover its employees.
- Certain federal service under CSRS.
If none of those describe you, the repeal is news that does not concern you, and a plan built around it is built around nothing.
